Feline Mobility Assessment

The Feline Mobility Assessment (FMA) is a structured tool for assessing and quantifying mobility in cats, designed for use by veterinarians and cat owners in a variety of settings. It comprises a set of prompts covering behaviours such as willingness to jump, exercise/playfulness, grooming, and reaction to touch. Responses help characterise a cat’s current mobility and can detect subtle changes over time. The FMA supports evaluation of a treatment or rehabilitation plan, allowing adjustments to improve comfort and function. Overall, it is a practical resource for understanding and managing feline mobility concerns.

How to complete the questionnaire: For each prompt in the assessment, please select the option that best reflects how much you agree or disagree with the statement as it relates to your cat. Each selection has a corresponding value that contributes to the final score. When all prompts have been completed, the final result will be available, and additional options will be enabled so you can print/save or copy the outcome of the assessment.

Interpreting the results: Use the final score after completing all prompts as a quick guide to your cat’s mobility and the level of pain they may be experiencing, where 6–7 = Very Severe, 8–14 = Severe, 15–21 = Moderate, 22–28 = Mild, and 29–30 typically indicates your cat is not affected by arthritis. Repeating the assessment over time and comparing scores with the initial baseline can show how your cat is responding to treatment or other factors. A consistent increase in the total score or movement to a better mobility tier usually indicates improvement.
