Colorado Canine Acute Pain Scale

The Colorado State University Canine Acute Pain Scale (CSU-CAP) (© 2006/PW Hellyer, SR Uhrig, NG Robinson) is an easy-to-use tool designed for assessing and monitoring acute pain in dogs. The CSU-CAP aids veterinary professionals in making clinical decisions regarding pain management and helps determine whether analgesics should be administered.

Findings are converted into a score which can be tracked over time.

Observe the dog at rest and with gentle palpation, noting behavior, response to touch, and overall body tension. Match your findings to the single best row (0–4) on the scale, record the score, and document key signs; then reassess after any treatment or when the dog’s condition changes.
