Canine Mobility Assessment

The Canine Mobility Assessment (CMA) is a structured tool for assessing and quantifying mobility in dogs, designed for use by veterinarians and dog owners in a variety of settings. It comprises a set of prompts such as their willingness to rise, jump, exercise tolerance and activity/enjoyment. Responses help characterise a dog’s current mobility and can detect subtle changes over time. The CMA supports evaluation of a treatment or rehabilitation plan, allowing adjustments to be made to improve comfort and function. Overall, it is a practical resource for understanding and managing canine mobility concerns.

How to complete the questionnaire: From the prompts in the assessment, please select the option that best reflects how much you agree or disagree with the statement and how it relates to your dog. Each selection has a corresponding value which contributes to the final score calculated. When all of the prompts have been completed, the final result will be available, and other options will be enabled so you can print/save or copy the outcome of the assessment.

Interpreting the results: Use the final score after completing all prompts as a quick guide to your dog’s mobility and the level of pain they may be experiencing, where 6-7 = Very Severe, 8–14 = Severe, 15-21 = Moderate, 22-28 = Mild, and 29-30 is typically an indication that your dog is not experiencing pain. Repeating the assessment over time and comparing scores with the initial baseline can show how your dog is responding to treatment or other factors. A consistent increase in the total score or movement to a better mobility tier usually indicates an improvement.
